Tackling Food Insecurity and Empowering Communities
United Way of South Central Illinois Making a Difference in Our Community United Way of South Central Illinois is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families in Jefferson, Marion, and Washington counties.
Through a variety of initiatives and partnerships, we are making a significant impact in addressing social issues and promoting community well-being. Here are some of the highlights of our work:
Monthly Mobile Markets and Tiny Pantries: In our commitment to addressing food insecurity, we are proud to sponsor monthly mobile markets. These markets provide essential groceries to those in need, ensuring that individuals and families have access to nutritious food. Additionally, we have recently added two new tiny pantries in our community. These miniature food pantries provide 24/7 access to essential supplies and nourishment for individuals facing food insecurity.
Promoting Voter Participation: At United Way of South Central Illinois, we believe in the power of every voice. That's why we are dedicated to promoting voter participation. Through various initiatives, we encourage and empower individuals to exercise their right to vote, strengthening our democracy and ensuring that everyone's voice is heard.
United Way Food Truck Fest: Our highly successful United Way Food Truck Fest brought the community together in celebration of local cuisine and philanthropy. This event not only raised funds for our initiatives but also provided an opportunity for local food vendors to showcase their culinary talents. We believe that community engagement and support go hand in hand with enjoying delicious food.
Advocating for 211: We passionately advocate for the crucial helpline service, 211. 211 provides essential services and resources to individuals in times of crisis. By raising awareness about its services, we ensure that individuals can easily access the assistance they need when facing challenges and emergencies. Milestone Celebration: This year, we celebrated an incredible 40 years of serving our community. We are grateful for the unwavering support we have received throughout this journey and look forward to continuing our efforts for years to come. Our longevity is a testament to our commitment to making a difference in the lives of individuals and families in our region.
IDHA Mortgage Program: Through our partnership with the IDHA Mortgage program, we have helped 56 families stay in their homes. By providing financial assistance and support, we prevent homelessness and ensure stability for these families. We believe that having a safe and secure home is fundamental to a thriving community.
Mental Health Support: We understand the importance of mental health and wellness. This year, we held multiple events to raise awareness and provide assistance. By reducing stigma and promoting holistic well-being, we aim to create a community where mental health is prioritized and supported.
Partnership with Cedarhurst Center for the Arts: In collaboration with Cedarhurst Center for the Arts, we organized Family Fun Pop-Ups. These events blended art, creativity, and community engagement, providing families with memorable experiences while promoting the importance of arts in our lives. We believe that art has the power to inspire, unite, and enrich our community.
Assisting with Tornado Needs in Salem: When our community faced the devastating aftermath of a tornado, we stepped up to provide immediate assistance. Our top priority was addressing the needs of individuals affected by the disaster, offering support and resources to help them rebuild their lives. In times of crisis, we are committed to being a reliable and compassionate support system for our community.
Promoting Literacy: We are proud to have provided books to over 500 children in our region. By fostering a love for reading and expanding access to books, we empower future generations with the tools to succeed. Literacy is a fundamental skill that opens doors to education, opportunities, and personal growth.
Resource Assistance: Throughout the year, we have assisted individuals by connecting them with much-needed resources. Our dedicated team ensures that those facing financial hardship, housing instability, or other challenges receive the support they need to navigate their circumstances. We believe in providing a helping hand and empowering individuals to overcome obstacles and thrive.
Supporting Organizational Partners: Collaborating with like-minded nonprofits is essential to amplifying our impact and working collectively towards our shared goals. That's why we extend our support to twelve organizations in our community. Together, we strive to create a stronger and more resilient community for everyone.
At United Way of South Central Illinois, our focus is on making meaningful and lasting changes in our community. We are dedicated to addressing social issues, promoting well-being, and creating opportunities for individuals and families to thrive. With the support of our community and partners, we are confident in our ability to continue making a positive impact for years to come.
